Baryahero is a platform that connects people who need and have coins. It aims to solve the coin shortage and coin hoarding in the Philippines.
Our story started way back in 2017 with the idea of connecting these people by providing a platform that they can utilize for coin exchange, have an ease of getting coins nearby for their businesses, and also get incentives for people who have coins that we so called "Barya heroes." Baryahero aims to solve or alleviate these two pains for businesses and consumers.
1. Coin shortage despite the increase in the penetration rate of e-wallets, credit cards, and other digital payments in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic, the coin shortage persists. As a matter of fact, "Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas" or BSP is planning to deploy coin deposit machines (CoDM) in an effort to promote efficient coin recirculation in the country. These are the proofs that the coin shortage is a long-overdue problem here in the Philippines, especially in the provinces.
2. Coin hoarding is a problem when it comes to recirculating coins; some people hoard or collect them, while others leave them behind altogether, leading to an artificial coin shortage. The Philippines actually has a law against coin hoarding to prevent people from collecting or hoarding vast amounts of coins, which is currently penalized by 1 year of imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 pesos. This activity, along with the common practice of keeping coins in piggy banks and commercial undertakings such as the Automatic Tubig Machines, which use coins for operation, video game machines, and Pisonet, may threaten the sound circulation of coins in the country.
Baryahero could be one of the coin exchange solutions out there that makes our country, the Philippines, have a healthy coin circulation. It could encourage more Filipinos to circulate back the coins that they have, while businesses could never miss a transaction again because of the lack of coins.
